Shimmering Moon (2019)
Solo Piano
Program Notes
Shimmering Moon takes inspiration from one night not too long ago, where I sat by a campfire in solitude under a clear night sky, feeling immense peace as I witnessed the beauty of a silver shimmering moon. I love the night sky, and the peace it brings. It reminds me of when I was a child, and I would go camping with my family. We would go everywhere we could, the desert of Central Australia to the outback bush of NSW. It didn't matter where we went, there was nothing that brought me greater peace and awe of the world around me than seeing that beautiful shimmering moon, matched in brightness only by the fire we burnt.
Inspired by the calm and meditative state my mind was in when writing this piece, this work is written to be explored in an extremely rubato style. Dynamics and tempo are largely up to the discression of the performer, with rough indications offered. There is also a section that is to be loosely improvised. This work is written for those looking to develop and explore a more musical and expressive side to their playing, rather than focussing on technical playing with lots of fast notework.
