Sandstorm (2022)
Written for the "Stormblowers", a wind ensemble from the Orange Regional Conservatorium of Music
Program Notes
Have you ever witnessed the might of a sandstorm? As massive walls of dust encompass all around, crops can be destroyed and water can be polluted. For many in the world, these sandstorms are awe inspiring, but for many others they can be disastorous. Sandstorm draws upon a variety of scales and modes, including the phrygian and the Persian modes, elements that are common in Middle Eastern music, a place where sandstorms are regularly found. It also draws inspiration from the West African djembe in the prominant tom tom line, another region of the world that is often plagued by these sandstorms. Throughout the piece, Sandstorm relies on these rythmic and melodic elements to take the listener on a journey through the action packed storm that awaits.
