Lux Aeterna (2019)

SSAA Chamber Choir

Program Notes

The human voice has always fascinated me. Dissonances and cluster chords that sound harsh when played by an instrument can sound ethereal and beautiful when sung. The emotion it brings, how it can sing out more than any instrument can, it enthrals me. Written just before I took 2 years off my studies to become a missionary, I thought it was fitting that I would try write a piece that reflects God's love and light, and Lux Aeterna is the result of that. Every choice that I made when I wrote this piece was attempting to create beauty. The lyrics are from an old Latin poem, translating to "eternal light", the chamber choir is built from sopranos and altos, and harmonies have attempted to use this unique effect the voice has when sung in close harmony. Everything I did when writing this piece was attempting to portray one thing.

Eternal light.

Performed by Ariel Bonnell (Soprano 1), Courtney Cousins (Soprano 2), Chloe Sinclair (Alto 1), Aija Draguns (Alto 2), Hamish Reeves (Composer & Pianist)
