Home is Where My Heart Belongs (2023)
Commissioned by Wollongong City Brass & Wind Bands
Program Notes
In March 2024, I will be leaving behind the familiar landscapes of my native Australia to embark on a new chapter in the USA, to marry the love of my life. This move, at times, terrifies me, but I know the most amazing opportunities await me just over the Pacific. Those who have packed up everything they own and set sail to a new place know the range of emotions that race through your mind when you prepare to leave. There's excitement, wonder, anxiety, fear, and in my case joy as I prepare to spend eternity with my fiancé. I spent the better part of a year and a half feeling these emotions, wondering where home is for me. When the Wollongong City Brass & Wind Bands and I decided to work together, I realised I had the perfect opportunity to explore in song my emotions that I always struggled to put into words. I decided to explore where home truly is for me.

This composition became my artistic canvas to explore and articulate the ineffable sense of "home." It is a sacred work utilising the softest tones a clarinet section can produce, all the way to the deafening louds of a wind band and organ.
